A Tale Worth Telling is the new solo exhibition by Canadian artist Anne Griffiths, consisting of ten paintings completed during the spring of 2026 at the artist’s studio in Victoria, British Columbia.
Time spent paying close attention to a place leaves you with something worth sharing — that simple belief shapes the exhibition. Each of the ten paintings is titled using literary terminology, a gesture that introduces a measured, tongue‑in‑cheek humour while inviting viewers into a broader discourse on nature, conservation, and the evolving relationships individuals form with their environments.
Griffiths paints the Canadian landscape from memory. She does not sketch on site, does not work from photographs, and does not strive for literal depiction. She goes out, into the woods or down to the water, and stays long enough for the place to register; the painting comes much later, in the studio. The resulting works hover between abstraction and landscape, never fully resolving into either.
As with all her work, colour remains the point of departure. Griffiths begins each painting by mixing a single hue, often with prolonged deliberation - until it feels right. That colour becomes the anchor, the tone to which every subsequent mark must respond. The compositions are built on the spaces between things. Griffiths's approach to structure is informed by her background in graphic design, where negative space served as a primary organising principle. She reads a forest or shoreline similarly, attending to intervals rather than discrete objects. This emphasis on spatial relationships enables the work to function simultaneously as abstraction and landscape, maintaining a productive tension between the two.
